Former Devil's Tale sports editor still with newspapers

I was the sports editor in 1959-60 and had a column "Spier on Sports".   I thought I wanted to be a journalist so I attending the U of Missouri which had (and still has) a great journalism school.  I dropped the idea after my freshman year and majored in math and statistics, becoming a computer programmer for about 35 years.  I am still very much involved in sports and, in "retirement", I am director of a small non-profit, "National Scholastic Athletics Foundation" which puts on the national high school indoor and outdoor track and field championships.  My close friend, and fellow 1960 Plainedge graduate, is Hank Sessa who works with us from time to time as well.

Hi All,
Bob Bloom, Class of 1966, here.
As a former writer and sports editor for the Devil's Tale, I find it amazing that after all this time, I am still in the field of journalism.
While so many other people I know have changed what they originally planned for their lives after high school and college, I guess I was just too lazy to try a different path.
Anyway, I don't write sports.
No, now I have a variety of jobs.
I work at a newspaper in Lafayette, Ind., which is part of the Gannett chain of newspapers.
I am a copy editor, but also am the paper's movie critic as well as its DVD reviewer.
And about 9 months ago, Gannett decided they liked my DVD column and picked it up for the rest of the papers in the chain.
So, now I am the DVD reviewer for the Gannett News Service.
I also have become a ham!!
Newspapers have changed radically in the past 40 years, with the Internet being the biggest influence. Our paper has a Web site, and it is getting into video reporting, so for the past few months, I have been doing videos of my movie reviews.
I can say with all modesty, that some of them are rather good.
Well, so much for that. Just wanted to update people and let them know that I am alive and well and still having fun with the written word.
Anyone wishing to contact me, can e-mail me at bloomjc@yahoo.com
Take care, PHS friends and fellow alums,
Bob Bloom
