I also went to Packard from Eastplain, I was always curious of who Sylvia Packard was, can you shine any light on this?

PHS ('77): Loved packard!  I was the morning 'weather man' for a while.  Had to stand outside with a sling psychrometer in freezing temps to get the Relative Humidity.  The Planetarium was aces!

But as usual for Plainedge: idiotic School board (many over the years) made yet another bad decision: demo one of the youngest schools they have and move the JHS to the outer reaches of the district... They were (and still are) manipulative (remember Auserity measures when you don't pass a budget?: bussing #1) jerks.

My God, so much of what you wrote is so true!  Didn't know about Efem Zimbalist..very cool.  The part about Miss Nichols is classic, she was really hot!  She used to hang out at a house near where I live and saw her there when I was trick or treating and stayed at the door WAY too long.  The rumor mill was cranking in 8th grade saying that Mr. Cataldi and her were having an affair and it destroyed his marriage.  the planetarium was the jewel of our district but was completely underutilized.  Whenever I tell people that my Jr. HS has a planetarium, they are in awe.  Still can't figure out why they are tearing down the newest school in the district.  Odd....

"Sure why don't you start with, I can't believe that the school board is even considering selling, let alone allow the demolition of a building that is only 45 years old. Why not ask the current school board, "Didn't you learn from past mistakes, like selling Baldwin Drive, Southedge JHS, and Picken and a 3 story administration building that was paid for?" How efficient is it for a school district to have only 1 JHS, and then locate it on ots northern most boundry? Wouldn't a centrally located JHS like Packard be a better choice? But I digress, this current school board is no better or brighter than when I graduated in '82. Here's some memories, getting a copy of the elevator key and using it to make out with various members of the opposite sex for the 3 years that I was there. Being the first 6th grade class to inhabit the "new" middle school, it was great being a guinea pig. Having Efram Zimbalist the 3rd as a substitute shop teacher, and having one of my astute classmates ask him, "Do you study zimbals?" You can google Mr. Zimbalist to see who his father was. More memories, the G.O. store had a button making machime that would make anything into a button, that went bad real fast. I stated in Mr. Beechers class that the first toilet was invented by a man named Crapper in Flushing ,NY and he took offense to it and gave me detention until he found out that I was kind of right with my facts. Riding my bike to school with my friends, I don't know if they even do that anymore. The juke box in the cafeteria, spending money to hear music,"I wonder who got that money?" Staring at Ms.Nichols all class long and not hear a word she said, then riding my bike past her house hoping to see her wash her car in a bikini. Good luck with your project, hope I've helped."

Sylvia Packard was my Mom's best friend, she died of brain cancer....my parents started a group called PACE {parents action for chiildren's education} Sylvia and her husband Howard were very involved with school change & they named the new JH after her. I was in the second class to attend & it was like entering the future. Multi-colored {"black boards"} to match the room, awesome science labs, floor to ceiling windows, central AC, it had it's own planetarium {great make-out room} it was the koolest school ever!!! I have lots of fond memories of that awesome school that was around the corner from my house.....sad to hear of it's demise cry.gif

From what I understand, they are tearing it down because it is falling apart-supposedly it was built in a hurry!?!?  I remembering going there in elementary school to visit the planetarium, and think how COOL it was. It really is a shame, it's a beautiful schoolno

It's a shame, I have many fond memories of Sylvia Packard. I remember all the times we would throw things down the spiral stairs to watch them go 'splat'! I remember when I dropped an entire quart bottle of that stuff they use to make a puppy pee on the paper down the spiral stairs and it took them almost a year to get rid of the smell. Smoking in the bathrooms, getting suspended for fighting, failing typing class, ahhh those were the days.

I remember leaving John H. West in 6th grade and starting my 7th grade classes in Sylvia Packard JHS. The school was only one year old and I remember how bright and new everything looked without dingy walls and floors with years of abuse. The school looked so much brighter and bigger and I remember thinking how 7th grade was going to be so much different that elementary school. Living at the time on Boundary Avenue; walking to school meant a longer walk than my short five minute walk to John H West; I also remember meeting new schoolmates now that elementary schools in the area were now being banded together at this school.

This school is right in the middle of a residential area with plenty of room for after school activities; why would the administration want to tear this school down? Did they sell it to a developer so that more homes can be built or are they converting it into a convalescent home community?

Where are the kids going now?

I am a current high school student at plainedge and I am an aspiring journalist, writing an article about the plans to sell and demolish Packard. I was wondering if anyone could give me their feelings on this demolition or any memories of the school.
