The Mr Maringolo that you refer to I believe was my sixth grade teacher in the north edge elementary school. I was always curious to find out what happened to him. He had a big influence on me.
Yes, I remember Mr. Sarlin's creative writing workshops. They were wonderful. He would read to us, and give us short assignments. Then he would read some of what we had written and he always gave some positive feedback. He made you feel like you were a budding Pulitzer Prize winner.
hi amy i dont know if you remember me i lived across the street from you next door to the grays . how is your family. my parents still live in the same house on queens avenue
Are there any alumni of the Interage Program out there? I was in Mrs. Kimball's 1-2-3 at John H. West, and later in Mr. Peluso'd/Mrs. Rosenthal's 5-6 at Schwarting. But it was 3 years in Mrs. Kimball's class that probably did more to shape me than just about anything else. It was a pretty intense three years. At West, Mrs. Bernstein also had a 1-2-3 Interage class.
I think it would be really interesting to collect recollections from people who were part of that program. It was a pretty innovative thing at the time. I have what I would guess is the only existing copy of a large brochure about Interage. I'm on the cover, along with Kenny Norris and Michael Carter. There are a bunch of great pictures throughout. It's pretty weird sometimes to look at those pictures of us in school when we were 8.
If there are any other Interagers out there, I'd love to hear from you.
Janet: I remember you well from Mr. Peluso's calls. I actually transfered into his class in 6th grade, so only had him for a few months. But I remember how we were all upset about losing him whe he became an assistant proniple or something. I also have to admit I remember picking on you a bit back then in the way obnoxous, insecure, thoughtless 6th graders tend to do. My apologies. You were friends, with Anne Fulton, I seem to recall, and lived near the High School. I hope the years have treated you well! Inter-age was a great program. I really feel that it shaped my life in lots of ways. All in all, Plainedge (particularly in the elementary schools) provided a pretty fine education.
Debbie, Yes, I went to Robert E. Picken. You guys think you're going back? I went to Picken for fourth, fifth & sixth grade with Mr. Deitch, Mrs. Van Prague, and Mr. Bernhart: 1959-1961.
First, second and third grades were at John H. West-Miss Mallick,Kindergarden, Mrs. Henderson, 1st grade, Mrs. Simms 2nd grade, and Mrs. Spiegal, 3rd grade. Mrs. Yerry was the Princiapal.
I was not part of the interage program, but you folks are bringing back memories! Thank's so much. Would love to hear from any of you on this board.
I lived on Florence Road, behind what was Dan's, then Met Food, then Brill's Grocery Store.
i didnt go to john h west but alot of my friends from BALDWIN DRIVE(remember that school) went there in the 6th grade because baldwin closed down. the other half of us went to eastpalin. i missed my friends from baldwin. but i remember my first friend i met at eastplain , toni devito, who squirted water in my face. when we finally met in packard in the 7th grade it was so hard getting to know one another again. does anyone remember that? i do remember a teacher, mrs wertzel from baldwin that sang to us as we came into class. it was the "hello everybody yes indeed" song. she was also crazy about dancing on every friday-i was not. i think that the graduating class of 79 got thrown alot of curves-we also had to go into the high school in 9th grade because packard was changing into a "middle school", while southedge jr hi stayed there for 9th. i also remember mrs mortorano-the chorus teacher whose long brightly painted nails could always be heard tapping on the keys as she played the piano. packard was a beauthful school, and now i hear that it's going to be torn down. what a shame-remember the planetarium and mr will the science teacher.
i could go on-but i'll let someone else. just remembering having such good times is really great.
Lorraine: If you send me your address at my e-mail (blevy@smu.edu) I will send you a copy of this really cool brochure about interage that I have. I suspect it is the only copy that exists. It has pictures from Mrs. Bernstein's class and Mrs. Kimball's. I don't recall you (you are two years older than I am), but you might actually be in the one of the pictures. There is a nice picture of Orin Heend and of Stacy Feldman, so you will recognize some of the kids, for sure.
Hi! I was in Miss Bernstein's interage for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades and then went to John H West for 4th, 5th and 6th with Ms. Condellas. I agree with you. What an outstanding educational experience. Nothing like today really...letting us go as far as we could but still keeping respect in the classroom. I think we were very, very lucky. I graduated in 1971...left after 9th grade in 1968 as my parents moved their business to Miami. The thing is that interage was great because I had the same classmates from 1st to 9th grade. I'm still in touch at least weekly with one of my friends from 1st grade!!!! Amazing! What fond memories!
I can't believe I never noticed your posting before. Karen is doing great, she lives in Australia now with her husband and 2 boys. She is semi-retired from practicing law and she & her husband run a sports photography business in Brisbane: http://www.sportography.com.au
She was in Florida for a few weeks with my mom last month, but is back home (in the beautiful Queensland summertime) now.
Rich: Has been a long time! Those wiffle ball games were fun, as were the pick up football, softball, and baskeball games after school at Schwarting. I don't think a lot of kids play that way anymore, as things for them seem to be much more organized and regiminted. Great to hear from you. Why not email me at blevy@smu.edu to give me a fuller sense of your life since Plainedge. Do you remember taking driver's ed together with Mr. Claus? Love to hear from you!
Mr. Levy...as they say, better late than never....I was in interage from first grade on thru sixth including peluso who was a fine teacher...still mention to my 18 year old daughter the wiffle ball games we used to have...hope all is well with you...
Hi Bruce, Thanks for writing back, It is so strange that you said I picked on you because I remember really liking you and thinking how sweet you were. I was picked on through junior high and high school by the same two guys, I never told anyone, I was too embarrassed. I know how bad it feels, maybe that was my payback. Im truly sorry. I hope your life turned out great, Im sure it did. It seems strange to be talking but Im glad we are.
I have not seen Leslie for many years, we were always together when we were little, I ran into her brother in New York a few years back and he said she was doing really well. I moved to San Diego (La Jolla) after high school until 1990,then I moved to Sun Valley, Idaho for 10 years (to learn to ski), now I live near San Luis Obispo (near the beach again). I have been here five years. Im not sure what is next!
Are you still in New York? I would love you to send me a copy of the brochure you were talking about, I will e-mail you with my address.
Hi Alyse. Of course I remember you! How could I not? Well, I was way too weirdly shy in High School to talk to you, so maybe you thought I had forgotten. I remember Leslie Hotaling coming up to me in 10th grade and asking me in a suprised way: "Don't you remember me?" Well, of course I did--and remembered how you two were almost inseparable in Mrs. Kimbell's 1-2-3 class. I also recall the two of you picking on me on more than one ocassion. You were both pretty devilish kids. But all is forgiven!
I hope the years have treated you well. As I wrote in an earlier posting on this site, I have a copy of a promotional brochure called "Interage Classes in the Plainedge School District. Why not e-mail me your address at blevy@smu.edu and I'll send you a copy. Speaking of Leslie, there's a really sweet picture of her, Janet LaRocco, and a girl whose name I think was Debbie Skeeba (who moved away). They're working on a mosaic. I swear I remember working on that--and even the dress Leslie is wearing. I'm pretty sure you are in another picture (you face is a bit obscured by a globe), but pretty positive it's you. Mrs. Kimbell looks on proudly as Lisa Polokoff (she also moved away) reads from a book. I would guess it is from first grade--as their are some older kids in it. I once went to visit Mrs. Kimbell when I was in high school. I was amazed how small she was. She certainly seemed like a giant when I was in her class. She could be very intimidating.
Bruce. I dont know if you remember me but I remember you and those six years very well, wish I could remember what happened yesterday! I have a great class photo. I was in Mrs Kimballs 1-2-3. I rode the bus to school all those years because my parents thought I was gifted and interage was what I needed. I always thought it was for the opposite reason and they just didnt want to tell me! I had to ride that little yellow bus for six years. I was in love with Mr Warren.we played softball with him. and Mr.Claus I have great memories at John H West. Hello to all my friends from the past. Alyse
I saw Mr. Portum in 2001 at the All-Class reunion. He showed up at the, then MVP Cafe and belted out a few songs. He can still sing and still in great shape.
Amy, I know you responded to a question about Lisa, I'm writing about Karen....how is she doing? We were friends back in Junior High/High School. Hope all is well with the family.
Regarding interage, did anyone attend at Robert E. Picken? I was in Miss Goldberg's 2-3 class, and 4-5 with Mr. Goie.
My daughter was in a 1-2 multiage class and it was WONDERFUL. My son is in a K-1 multiage class right now, with an outstanding teacher. Having done it myself, I was glad my kids could enjoy a similar experience.
Hi all, i remember Mr. Philips, he was at Eastplain first I think. I do remember he did a Lavoris mouth wash commercial. My sister had a big crush on the guy.
Mr. Pordum was a really good man. I remember how he carried himself with a lot of dignity. He seemed to be really confident-- and was a kind, generous guy. Does anyone remember Mr. Phillips, the gym teacher at Southedge? He was a male model. I recall watching Mr. Pordum wrestle him once. No contest. Pordum in a cakewalk.
I was there from 1969 to 1975 (K-5th). I think you are right Ms. Lombardi became Mrs. Martorano.
When I graduated from JHWest I had a little autograph book signed by many of the teachers, If I find it I will post other names of teachers just for nostalgias sake.
I remember playing handball with Leo Claus at PHS. I spent many a lunch hour battling and bonding with my fellow classmates, I heard they tore down the handball court, I guess it promoted hooliganism (as it sometimes did). Th end of an era.
My favorite Gym teacher was Mr. Pordum, he was absolutely the best! He was one of the few teachers I really connected with. He used to have a cool goatee and was a amatuer opera singer. I think he had a soft spot for troubled teens (of which I was one).
I can go on and on about PHS but I promise to spare you all!!!
Stan: What years were you at West? I guess I'm from an earlier generation. I was there from 61-64. Mrs. Yerry was the principal. I remember Mr. Whitman, the art teacher--but he was at Schwarting when I knew him. I seem to recall that he had a bit of a temper. Our gym teacher was Mr. Klaus, who later went on to Plainedge. He was also my driver ed teacher. Our Music teacher was Miss Lombardi, who might have gotten married and become your music teacher. She was great. They would roll her piano into the classroom and she would greet us by singing "Hello everybody, yes indeed." Does anyone remember Mr. Sarlin, who didn't work for the school, but would come ocassionally to do creative writing workshops?
Amy: Are you Lisa's younger sister? She was in my graduating class, although she was way cooler than me--so we didn't hang out much. Although we had mutual friends. I went to Schwarting for two years. After 4 years at West it was fn to be bale to walk to school. I had Mrs. Herman, who left after a year. And then Mr. Peluso in interage. He also left and was replaced by Mrs. Rosenfeld. I also saw Mr. Meringolo's obituary. My sister did 6 years at schwarting, so Mr. Meringolo was a well known man in my household. I rememeber him as a relly good man.
I was in interage at Schwarting, for 2nd-3rd grade (Mrs. Aronson, 1966-1967) and 5-6th (Mrs. Greenberg, 1969-1970). I loved it when I was in the lower half of the ranges since I was allowed to go a little further, but I remember feeling pretty bored in the upper half. Any other Schwarting-ers here? I saw Mr. Meringolo's obit recently, made me a little sad.
I remember Mrs. Shockley had grades 3-4, consequently I had her for both years. I also think Mr.Sculley and Mr. Warren (remember the cigar) had 5-6 until Packard started taking 6th graders (around 1975).
Some other teachers I remember from JHWest... Mr. Whitman: Art Roy Schoenberg: Principal
Mrs. Martorano: Music - I remember she had the chorus do an actual Christmas album on vinyl around 1974.
I forgot the Gym teachers name he used to play that "go you chickenfat" song and called us nippleheads! He later went on to the high school. Wait... I Got it... Mr. Sybil
Other Teacher names from the 70's... Mrs. Klotsas, Mrs. Condellas, Mrs. Broizman, Mrs. Haladay, Mrs. Greenfield, Mrs. Edlin
Wow! My brain hurts... I remember JHWest better than Packard or PHS!
Outstanding memory - Mr. Dempseys class yikes! That one passed beyond my recall horizon. I have but two distinct recollections of Mrs. Lewis' class; one of a class trip to her husband's ship and the other of a very entertaining puppet show which you put on. I can hear your puppet singing:
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I guess I'll eat some worms, Long worms, short worms, fat worms, skinny worms, Worms that like to squirm.
Ill bite their heads off, Suck the juice out, Throw the skins away, I dont know why people dont, Eat worms three times a day.
Still love it, used to hum it on the subway. Funny what we recall.
Anyway - Back in the day at West, I knew that there were other Interage classes incorporating 2 grades but did NOT know there were 3 grade classes as you describe. A 1-2-3 class? - With the comprehension/maturity differential between grade 1 and grade 3 how did that work? What were they thinking?
Id really would like a copy of the Interage brochure, send me a note to df123@attglobal.net and Ill reply with my address.
Of course I remember you from Mrs. Lewis's fourth grade class, my last year at West. My memory is so good that I even remember you telling me that your father once dated Linda Darnell, the big movie star from the '40's who was later klilled in a house fire. I wonder how many 4th graders in 1965 or 1966 had ever heard of her. And I remember you from Mr. Dempsey's 10th grade world history class, circa 1971. I didn't actually realize there were so many Interage classes at West. If you send me your address, I'll mail you a copy of the Interage brochure I wrote about.
